What is a video pipe inspection?

A video pipe inspection, also called a CCTV plumbing inspection, sewer camera inspection or plumbing camera inspection, is the fastest and most accurate way to diagnose a drain or sewer line. Instead of guessing, digging or replacing pipe that may be perfectly fine, our technicians feed a video camera through the line and inspect it from the inside. Whether you need a sewer line inspection for a home you are buying, a CCTV drain inspection for a restaurant or a sewer pipe video inspection to learn why the main line keeps backing up, the camera shows the truth.

Why Los Angeles property owners rely on it

Much of Los Angeles was built decades ago, and many homes and buildings still run on aging clay or cast iron sewer laterals. Mature trees push roots into joints, ground movement can crack or sag older lines, and cast iron scales and corrodes from the inside. A video camera pipe inspection finds these problems early, before they turn into a backup, a flooded floor or an expensive emergency. In Los Angeles the sewer lateral from the building to the city main is generally the property owner's responsibility, so knowing its condition protects your investment.

What our pipe video inspection camera finds

Tree root intrusion

Roots entering through joints and cracks, the most common cause of recurring main line clogs.

Cracks and breaks

Fractures in clay, cast iron, ABS and PVC lines, found before they collapse.

Bellies and sags

Low spots where water and waste settle and keep building new blockages.

Offset joints

Shifted or separated pipe sections that catch debris and leak into the soil.

Grease and scale

Heavy buildup narrowing the pipe, common in kitchen lines and older cast iron.

Corrosion

Rust and deterioration inside cast iron and galvanized lines.

Collapsed sections

Crushed or caved-in pipe that needs a targeted repair or replacement.

Blockages and objects

Wipes, debris and foreign objects lodged in the line, located precisely.

Video pipe inspection questions

What is a video pipe inspection?

A video pipe inspection, also called a CCTV plumbing inspection or sewer camera inspection, uses a waterproof camera on a flexible push cable to look inside drain and sewer lines. It shows cracks, tree roots, bellies, offset joints, buildup and blockages in real time, so the problem can be diagnosed without digging.

How does a CCTV sewer line inspection work?

A licensed plumber inserts the camera through a cleanout or other access point and pushes it through the line while live video streams to a monitor. A locating signal from the camera head lets the technician mark the exact position and depth of any problem from the surface, so repairs can target only the damaged section.

Do I need a sewer line inspection before buying a house in Los Angeles?

It is strongly recommended, especially for older Los Angeles homes with clay or cast iron sewer laterals. A standard home inspection usually does not include the sewer line, and in Los Angeles the lateral from the house to the city main is generally the property owner's responsibility. A pre-purchase sewer pipe video inspection shows its condition before you close.

Can a plumbing camera inspection find tree roots and cracks?

Yes. A plumbing camera inspection clearly shows root intrusion, cracks, breaks, corrosion, offset or separated joints, sagging sections, grease and scale buildup and lodged objects, along with where each one is located.

How fast can you do a video camera pipe inspection?

24/7 Rooter Service answers calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and dispatches fast, often the same day. Call (213) 281-4751 and a licensed plumber with camera equipment will be on the way.

Will a sewer camera damage my pipes?

No. The camera travels through the inside of the existing pipe from an access point, so a video pipe inspection is non-invasive and does not require digging.

Plumbing emergencies

Are you really open 24 hours a day?

Yes. 24/7 Rooter Service answers calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call (213) 281-4751 any time and we will get a licensed plumber moving.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

A plumbing emergency is anything that can damage the property, threaten health or leave you without essential water. That includes burst pipes, flooding, sewage backing up into drains or toilets, a gas leak, a leaking water heater, no water to the property, and a toilet that keeps overflowing. If you are unsure, call (213) 281-4751 and we will help you decide.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve right away, then turn off electricity to any area where water is near outlets or appliances, if it is safe to do so. Open a faucet at the lowest point of the house to drain remaining pressure, move valuables away from the water and call for a burst pipe repair. 24/7 Rooter Service responds around the clock.

How do I shut off the main water to my house?

Find the main shutoff valve where the water line enters the house, which in Los Angeles is often near the front hose bib, in the garage, or in a basement or crawl space, and turn it clockwise until it stops. If that valve will not close, the shutoff at the water meter near the street usually needs a meter key. Knowing where your valve is before an emergency can save thousands in water damage.

What should I do if my sewer line is backing up?

Stop running water and flushing toilets right away, keep people and pets away from the sewage, and do not pour chemical drain cleaner into the line. A sewer backup usually means the main line is blocked by roots, grease, debris or damaged pipe. A licensed plumber can clear it through a cleanout, then run a video pipe inspection to find the cause so it does not happen again.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the building right away, do not use switches or flames, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Once it is safe, call us for gas leak and gas line repair.

Drains and sewer lines

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Recurring clogs usually point to something deeper than a single blockage: grease buildup, hair and soap scum, wipes, mineral scale, tree roots, or a sagging or broken section of pipe. Snaking often only punches a hole through the clog, so it returns. Professional drain cleaning, hydro jetting and a camera inspection find and fix the real cause.

What is hydro jetting, and when do I need it?

Hydro jetting sends high-pressure water through a drain or sewer line to scour away grease, scale, debris and tree roots, cleaning the full width of the pipe instead of just punching a hole through a clog. It is a good fit for slow drains that keep coming back, main line backups and older lines with heavy buildup.

Is hydro jetting safe for older pipes?

Yes, when it is done right. We inspect the line with a camera first, then match the water pressure and nozzle to the pipe material and condition. If a section of old clay or cast iron is badly cracked or collapsed, we recommend repairing it before hydro jetting so the line is cleaned safely.

Can tree roots damage my sewer line?

Yes. Roots are drawn to the moisture inside sewer pipes and enter through joints and small cracks, especially in older clay and cast iron lines common in Los Angeles. Over time they cause slow drains, repeated backups and even broken pipe. We cut the roots out, hydro jet the line and, if needed, seal it with trenchless lining; see our tree root removal service.

What is trenchless sewer repair, and is it worth it?

Trenchless sewer repair fixes or replaces a sewer line through small access points instead of digging a long trench, using pipe lining or pipe bursting. It is often worth it because it protects landscaping, driveways and hardscape and usually finishes faster. Not every line qualifies, so a video pipe inspection comes first to confirm the best option.

Can you fix my sewer line without digging up the yard?

Often, yes. We start with a sewer camera inspection to see exactly what is wrong. Many damaged lines can then be repaired with trenchless sewer lining or pipe bursting, which needs only small access points instead of a long trench.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe for my pipes?

We do not recommend them. Harsh chemical drain cleaners can damage older pipes and fittings, rarely clear main line clogs, and leave caustic water sitting in the line that is dangerous for anyone who works on it next. For a clog that keeps coming back, mechanical cleaning or hydro jetting is safer and more effective.

Why does my house smell like sewer gas?

A sewer smell usually comes from a dry drain trap, a failed toilet wax ring, a blocked or damaged vent pipe, or a cracked sewer line. Try running water in unused sinks, tubs and floor drains to refill their traps. If the odor stays, call us; a sewer camera inspection can locate a hidden crack or broken line.

Water heaters, leaks and water pressure

How can I tell if I have a hidden water leak or slab leak?

Common signs include a water bill that jumps for no reason, the sound of running water when everything is off, warm or damp spots on the floor, mold or musty odors, and cracks in flooring or walls. A simple test: turn off every fixture and watch the water meter; if it still moves, you likely have a leak. Our leak detection pinpoints the source without tearing out walls or floors.

What causes low water pressure in a house?

Low pressure is usually caused by a failing pressure regulator, a partially closed valve, clogged faucet aerators or showerheads, a hidden leak, or old galvanized pipes narrowed by corrosion. If pressure is low throughout the house, the regulator or main line is the likely cause; aging galvanized pipes may call for a repipe.

Should I choose a tankless or tank water heater?

A tankless water heater heats water on demand, saves space, can lower energy use and often lasts longer, but costs more up front. A traditional tank costs less to install and is simpler to replace, and many tank units last around 8 to 12 years. We look at your household size, fuel type and budget and recommend the best fit, with a free estimate before any work begins.
